ICMRย stands for Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It is an apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research. It is funded by the Govt. of India through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world.
In keeping with the demand for more testing, the Centre has decided to allow accredited private labs to test for Covid-19. Dr Balram Bhargava, director general of Indian Council of Medical Research โ the countryโs apex body for health research โ confirmed this.
There are 50 to 60 private labs, accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Laboratories, that can do the test, Bhargava said.
At present, only government labs are permitted to do the test. Though their capacity is around 5,000 samples per day, only 60 to 70 samples are being processed daily. This is because current guidelines allow testing only for symptomatic individuals with travel history to affected countries or those in direct contact with an infected individual.
ICMR has a network of 106 Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories (VRDLs) across the country. These labs get samples of influenza like illnesses (ILIs) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) regularly.
Scientists said 13 of these labs have been testing 20 random samples for Covid-19 periodically since February to see if the novel coronavirus had spread to the community. The experts said all samples have so far tested negative.

As the number of patients affected by the virus across the country rose to 116, the Delhi government announced a series of restrictions, which includes a ban on gatherings of 50 and more people.
The government has issued a discharge policy for Covid-19, Cases of suspected coronavirus, who test negative in the first instance, can be discharged on doctorโs advice but will be monitored for 14 days after their last contact with a confirmed Covid-19 case, the guidelines said.
cases under which a positive case shall be managed as per protocol and discharged after only two samples test negative within 24 hours and thereโs evidence of chest radiographic clearance and viral clearance in respiratory samples.
